Free Sparring &


At the Orange Belt level, students begin free sparring. Taekwondo sparring is when two students engage against one another. The free sparring is probably the most difficult part of Taekwondo because students must throw techniques and block their partner’s attack at the same time. You and or your child will start sparring with light or no contact. As they get better at sparring and develop more control, they are allowed to touch their opponent’s body with different techniques.

Sparring is an exhilarating, fun and a valuable tool for each student to measure his or her own progress. Free sparring is one the best way for you or your child to learn self-defense as you need to evade or block incoming kicks and punches as, for example, it would happen if your child were attacked by a bully.

Building Strength and Focus through Board Breaking

To the uninitiated, breaking wood seems like a ritual. More than any other activity martial artists demonstrate, breaking boards makes the public stop and take notice. The reason? Well, probably because people cannot imagine how we have trained our bodies to not only strike, but to break a solid object without injury.  What they don’t realize is that with the level of training we do, it is pretty easy.  Or then again, maybe people just like to see stuff splinter into a million pieces. But whatever the reason, breaking is an integral part of rank advancement once you become a Brown Belt and provides a true objective test of technical still.  Board breaking is a part of testing used by the judging panel to measure the power and accuracy of a kicking or striking technique. Practical self defense means that the students is able to strike with enough force to stop an attacker under pressure.

Most of the broken wood is recycled, donated to the boy scouts following our testings for the purpose of building birdhouses. :)

Taekwondo for Men and Women (age 20+)

Besides being a powerful form of self defense, the exercise you get from Taekwondo-karate (aerobic / cardio, kickboxing, strength training, flexibility) benefits every part of the body, including how you feel about yourself, the health of your heart, the strength of your muscles and the density of your bones.

Our adult class is separate from the children’s. We are well aware of the needs each age group requires and we provide for those needs in having a very flexible schedule.

When you exercise your body produces endorphins, which are chemicals that make you feel more peaceful and happier. Exercise can help some people sleep better and help with mild depression and self-esteem. Plus, exercise can give you a real sense of accomplishment from having achieved goals.

Exercising to maintain a healthy weight also decreases your risk of developing certain diseases, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Exercise also helps prevent osteoporosis (weakening of the bones, making them more prone to breaking in later life among both men and women).

Taekwondo encourages the development of positive character traits such as respect for others and ones self, self-control, patience, perseverance, self-confidence, a "can do" mindset, and a non-violent attitude.

Students learn to step up to challenges, overcome obstacles and become role models for others.

You don't need to be in shape first. In fact, many beginner students have never exercised regularly before trying their first Taekwondo class. Of course, we encourage you to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program.  

Taekwondo for Teens (age 12+)

It is more challenging than ever to be a teenager in America.

We have the ultimate way for your teenager to build confidence, self-esteem, develop self-discipline, self-control, and athletic skills, while having lots of fun!

The majority of the students training in the school are teenagers. Our goal for your teen is to receive a Black Belt along with their High School Diploma! Being a Black Belt, or even a martial art Instructor, looks great on your college application! Both parents and students report to us that the discipline and confidence they learn in our center helps them do better in school and increases their chances of receiving a scholarship. Your teenager could be one of them!

We will also help your child develop skills to overcome their fears and successfully deal with life challenges such as bullying in High School.

Our program strives to provide your teenager with the self-confidence and focus they need to make it in today's world while teaching them how to be respectful. Strickland’s Taekwondo-karate center is a safe and positive environment, providing a fun activity-driven atmosphere where those with common interests can join together in physically rewarding and mentally challenging activities.

Teens training in our program also develop positive character traits such as perseverance, goal-setting, honor and discipline. Your teen will find that our martial arts program is high energy, exciting, motivating, and they will enjoy the workout as well as the life long friendships that are built exercising and training with people who have similar goals.

Taekwondo for Kids (Age 4+)

Recent studies indicate that children are less physically fit today than in past generations.

Taekwondo is an excellent way for your child to receive the proper exercise and fitness training they need, while also learning the art of effective self-defense and anti-bully tips and techniques.

Your child will learn how to reach their full potential through our confidence building martial arts program. Direct but caring instructors provide expert training in a fun, safe and disciplined environment to produce positive results. We develop vital skills of focus, respect, discipline, self-esteem and responsibility.

We teach children ages 4 and up how to punch and kick... correctly!  We have over 30 years of teaching experience.  Our Taekwondo program uses children's fascination with karate and other martial arts to teach them a practical, responsible self-defense program with numerous other benefits, both physical and mental.

Students and parents report that Taekwondo is a terrific supplement to keeping the children active and fit during off seasons of baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. However, it is not just for athletes! Taekwondo will greatly improve any child's fitness and flexibility. They're having so much fun that they don't know its work!
